The history of Universal Audio

Universal Audio was founded in 1971 by Bill Putnam Jr., son of legendary audio engineer Bill Putnam Sr. Putnam Sr. was one of the leading pioneers in sound engineering and he worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry including Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Elvis Presley. Putnam Jr. grew up in a sound studio, and he became interested in sound engineering early on. He studied sound engineering at the University of Southern California and subsequently worked as a sound engineer in Los Angeles. In 1971 he founded Universal Audio. Universal Audio's first product was an analog compressor called the 1176. The 1176 was a huge success and was quickly used by some of the biggest names in the music industry. Universal Audio continued to develop new analog compressors, amplifiers and sound cards, and the company's products quickly became the standard in professional audio. In 1999, Universal Audio launched its first digital sound card series, Apollo. The Apollo series was a huge success and helped make Universal Audio one of the leading manufacturers of audio equipment.
